HISTORY
Kingsley Speedway was opened in July 2004. It is a started as a small 1/10 mile clay oval that lending itself to exciting small track racing. After the 2007 season, the track was enlarged by about 35-50 feet on each straight. That will make for some exciting racing in the classes with more horsepower.......
There are still things to be done to get the track where the owners, Daryl and Sheryl Wiggins want it to be. Every year further improvements are made and the kart count continues to climb. In the spring of 2007, they purchased some additional land east of the track. That has allowed the construction of a new and larger pit area. The old pit area is now for spectator parking, something that was seriously lacking before.
The first year the kart count was understandably low, 8-12. In 2005 it jumped into the 20 and the 30's in 2006. 2007, saw a huge increase. There was a high of 51 with an average of 46.
The 2008 season started with expectations of increasing kart counts. That did not happen. Why? Some say the economy and the cost of fuel. Weather may have been a factor. Nine weekends were rained out. Whatever the reason, there were many that moved to tracks closer to home. The drop in karts was dramatic. From an average of 46 in 2007 to 15-18 in 2008. Only time will tell if there will be a turn around in 2009. The drop in karts resulted in some changes to the class structure. The Ladies and Blue Plate classes were eliminated. At the season ending awards ceremony, there was a discussion about possibly implementing classes with the "clone" engines to make the entry into karting much more affordable for the Purple and Gold Plate classes. If there is a comparable clone for the Stock class, that will be considered also.
The 2009 season did not have points racing. Racing was for fun. The kart count was low all year in the 10-15 range. The racing was interesting with the introduction of the clones in the purple, gold, and stock classes. Even though there was an open class, no karts were ever entered. With some minor modifications, the clones ultimately ended up being very close in performance to the flatheads, making the tires and setup the tie breaker. The reduced maintenance and low cost will hopefully result in some new racers in the years ahead.
